Incheon and Seoul, Republic of Korea

The Colorful Coda conference committee is excited to offer you a glimpse into Korean and Korean Deaf history with our pre-conference food and culture tour.

Our first stop will be Juan Sign Language Church. In Korean Deaf society, there is more to church than just religion. The site is a 43-year-old rural church where 60 Deaf and hearing members worship. It is also the place where Colorful Coda conference committee member Mi-hye Cho serves as an interpreter.

When the internet was not as widespread as it is now, the Deaf Church was a space for the community to gather. To this day, Deaf people frequent churches to socialize and meet others – and as part of our tour, we’ll get our chance to socialize with local Kodas and their Deaf parents!

Next, we will travel to Seoul to Restaurant Gyeongbokgung known for Korea’s world famous charcoal-grilled ribs, kalbi (vegetarian and vegan options available). We’ll enjoy our lunch family-style served with rice and a variety of side dishes called banchan.Get your chopsticks ready! Please let us know in advance of any food allergies. Note: There will be a lunch box: see updated Tour schedule.

After lunch, we will visit the Seoul National School for the Deaf. It is the first school for the Deaf in Korea with a 108-year history, and is the renowned Deaf school in Korea. Many of our parents graduated from the Seoul National School for the Deaf, including conference co-chairs Bora Lee-Kil’s parents and Su Kyong Isakson’s mother. This is a golden opportunity to see the history of Korea's Deaf schools!

The trip is not over yet!

After our private tour of the school, we will visit Gyeongbokgung Palace, home of the king during the Joseon Dynasty. Gyeongbokgung Palace is a representative palace of the Joseon Dynasty, which ruled the Korean Peninsula for 518 years from 1392 to 1897. In this wonderful palace, you can try on traditional ceremonial clothes worn by the Joseon people, called hanbok. Outside of the Gyeongbokgung Palace gates is historical Gwanghwamun Square situated in the heart of downtown Seoul. Gyeongbokgung Palace is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Korea! See and experience the beauty of Hanbok and Gyeongbokgung Palace for yourself!

Experience a fun filled day with the Korean Deaf community, Korean culture, food, and modern times with your personal Coda tour guide!
