Coda Talking, Hearing Listening
Presenter: Betty Colonomos

Codas and Deaf people communicating in English are often misperceived as rude or they
have been oppressed so much that they have abandoned their Deaf values of direct,
honest, and clear communication. Many codas are called upon in their jobs to use
semi-formal or formal English. Some do not have any experience in public speaking;
many do not have college degrees.

This workshop is about finding a "middle ground" where we don't have to completely
give up our values, yet hearing people are able to hear our intent and not react when the
style does not always conform to a society where the privileged, middle/upper class
decide the rules.

This workshop will have LOTS of activities for listening, using non-judgmental language,
recognizing and dealing with our "filters" (things that push our buttons), how to explain
our language to hearing people, and much more!
Registration will be made available through Bilingual Mediation Center .65 PS CEUs
